Watch case size and wrist fit: a practical guide
Compare case diameter, thickness, lug-to-lug length and bracelet adjustment when choosing a watch for your wrist.
Case diameter alone does not determine how a watch wears. Thickness, lug-to-lug length and the first bracelet links can all change its overall footprint. Compare these measurements together with your wrist size.
Measure your wrist first
Use a flexible measuring tape at the position where you wear your watch. Keep the tape comfortable rather than tight. For a bracelet, check whether links can be removed and what adjustment is available. For a strap, check the usable length, hole spacing and fastening type.
Four measurements to review
- Case diameter: the width of the case, normally excluding the crown.
- Case thickness: how far the watch rises from your wrist.
- Lug-to-lug length: the distance between the outer ends of the case lugs.
- Bracelet or strap fit: usable length and available adjustment.
Use photographs with the measurements
Close-up photographs can change the apparent proportions of a watch. Wrist photographs are useful, but they should be considered alongside the stated dimensions. An image alone does not establish the size of a part that has not been measured.
